More recently, great musicians such as Ramon Montoya playing Flamenco, and Andres Segovia playing Classical music, have helped bring recognition to the guitar as a solo instrument by demonstrating its versatility and capabilities.

Flamenco was usually played and sung either in duet or groups. The personal rapport between the guitarist and singer or dancer was more important than communication with a passive listening audience. The guitarist, singers and dancers spontaneously exchange feelings through the music which necessitates a great deal of improvisation.

In this respect Flamenco is very similar to the Classical music of India and modern jazz. Indian Classical music is played by two musicians who develop a particular theme by improvising, and through this process, exchange their feelings and moods. This is, to a great extent, also true of Flamenco.
